3 days — 3 lakes
The airports of Milan probably have the most connections in Europe. Every person living in Switzerland will probably need to fly through there at least once. This also means visiting friends will often pick Milan as their arrival destination. For me that means around four hours drive to pick them up. So in order not to waste so much time, why not make this into a road trip around three Italian lakes.
See the Google maps itinerary here.
Lago di Como
Probably the most touristic lake. In my opinion, Como itself is overrated and I much more enjoyed a small hotel in the hills of Nesso. Keep in mind that the roads from Como to Bellagio and then to Lecco are very narrow, so it can be dangerous for newer drivers or in bigger cars.
Lago di Lugano
Smallest of the 3 lakes and also the shortest visit during my trip. I cannot do justice to the beauty of this lake right now. I hope to visit Lugano, Balcone D’ Italia and Monte San Giorgio on another trip.
Lago Maggiore
Last part of our adventure and a very nice road from Locarno to Stresa. There are plenty of hotels on the coast with great views and great Italian food. At the end of the day, we decided not to take a boat to the many small islands around Stresa but instead headed back to the cool mountains of Switzerland.
